Good on the phone? Organised?  We are looking for volunteer phone operators (Duty Officers) to help co-ordinate our volunteer drivers with our elderly and infirm clients requiring transport to their medical appointments.

We are looking for volunteers who have a few hours to spare one day a month to arrange and co-ordinate our transport provision. The role whilst home-based is very interactive as the phone lines can be very busy and you will be chatting for most of the day!

On the day you're on duty, the Communicare number is diverted to yours (either landline or mobile) between 9.45am & 1pm. Calls are received from clients requesting transport. At 1pm call diversion is cancelled and you will then liaise with our team of volunteer drivers to arrange their schedules and write up the transport bookings. All telephone usage is reimbursed - so no cost to you.  Although we are not yet computerised, this is in progress and we are using WhatsApp task groups to liaise with most of our drivers.  This means that you will normally be able to arrange some lifts before the lines close at 1 pm. So as long as you communicate well on the phone and are efficient at keeping records - we'd love to hear from you!

New volunteers initially 'shadow' a Duty Officer until they get the hang of the role. This involves around three days over a period of a few weeks.

We take safeguarding very seriously and require that all our volunteers pass an enhanced DBS check.

Please note that due to the nature of our scheme, it is a pre-requisite that all our volunteers live within the Fleet, Church Crookham, Crookham Village or Dogmersfield area.

What skills do I need?

You need to be organised with good communication skills, have a clear speaking voice (many of our elderly clients are quite deaf) and heaps of common sense.

No computer skills are necessary, though they could be useful.

Currently a diary and card system is used to match the drivers with clients.

This is a really busy role and therefore being able to remain calm is important. The commitment for the day starts at around 10.00 am and ends some time in the afternoon, but never later than 5.30 pm.

Please note that you will need to have access to both a smart phone and a car for this role.
