Odiham District Scouts comprises nine independent groups across the local area. Scouts UK has renewed its focus on Safeguarding to ensure that the children and young people who enjoy a range of exciting, challenging and fun experiences can do so safely and free from harm. The Trustee for Safeguarding will work with those groups to ensure they have safeguarding in mind during their planning and that they learn lessons when things go wrong, as sometimes they do.
The Trustee Board meets once each term to review reports from the nine Group Lead Volunteers. Their teams deliver operational activity to the scores of children in that Group. The Safeguarding Trustee will consider the Safeguarding issues that each one has raised (if any) and determine whether the issue should be shared to improve wider learning. The Safety Trustee may feel that a visit might help understand the issue in more detail. From time to time Scouts UK may ask the District to review an incident that has been reported in order to ensure safeguarding is maintained and lessons are learned. In 2024 there were four instances that required a low-level review. Such a review can be conducted at a time to suit the Safety Trustee and others involved.
No specific skills or qualifications are required but an interest in Safeguarding, youth development and working as part of a team would be really helpful.
