Governors, work with the Headteacher, to provide strategic leadership and create accountability for educational and financial performance. Governors must ensure clarity of vision, ethos, and strategic direction. They must hold leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils and the performance management of staff. Governors oversee the financial performance of the school, making sure that the money is well spent. They make decisions collectively by consensus and do not interfere with the day-to-day running of the school. The role offers excellent developmental opportunities with many transferable skills.

As a School Governor, you will play a crucial role in shaping the direction and success of our school. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working collaboratively with fellow governors to establish the school's vision, values, and strategic objectives.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the school's performance to ensure it meets regulatory standards and achieves its goals.
  • Providing support and challenge to the leadership team, offering guidance and oversight to promote continuous improvement.
  • Representing the interests of parents, staff, and the wider community in decision-making processes.



What skills do I need?

We are looking for people with some knowledge of budgets, HR in the educational sector or a background in heath and safety. However no specific skills required as full training will be provided, and if you want to make a difference in the education of our children we are interested in hearing from you.

    All new governors have access to a full day's induction training- or two evening sessions. In addition there is free access to all HGS training sessions and briefings.

Availability Details

We meet 10 times a year, usually, but not always, on a Monday evening and our meeting last around 2 hours. In addition school governors are expected to visit school as part of a monitoring schedule. This is always by prior arrangement and normally during school hours.
