About
About Samaritans Listening Phone Service
What Happens When You Call Us?
When you call the Samaritans, a volunteer will answer with a greeting like, "Samaritans, can I help you?" Our primary role is to listen and help you talk through your concerns, worries, and troubles. We provide a safe and confidential space where you can express yourself freely.
Our Approach
We Listen, You Talk: We focus on your thoughts and feelings, asking questions to help you explore your emotions.
Non-Judgmental Support: We do not offer advice or make decisions for you. Our volunteers are here to support the decisions you make, acknowledging that you are the expert on your own life.
Confidentiality: Your number will not be displayed, and calls are free from both landlines and mobiles. Your call to us will not appear on your phone bill.
Who Can Call?
Anyone can call us for support, regardless of age or situation. Common reasons people contact us include relationship issues, loss, financial worries, job stress, loneliness, depression, and thoughts of suicide. We are also here for those who are d/Deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech impairments through email and the Next Generation Text (NGT) service.
Special Considerations
Youth Support: We support callers under 18, prioritizing their needs over those of parents or guardians.
Mental Health: We welcome calls from individuals with mental health issues, providing the same empathetic support to everyone.
Neutral and Confidential
Some people prefer talking to someone neutral rather than friends or family. We ensure privacy and do not pass on information or impose personal beliefs.

About Basingstoke Samaritans
We’re here, day or night, for anyone who’s struggling to cope, who needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure.
Samaritans is not only for the moment of crisis, we’re taking action to prevent the crisis. Basingstoke Samaritans aim to offer emotional support to anyone who needs it, without judgement or giving any advice. We want to work to prevent suicide by providing immediate and ongoing support to those in crisis, providing solace and support to those who have been touched by suicide, teaching caregivers and health providers the most effective ways to identify and respond to those at-risk for suicide, and making the public more aware of the extent of the current suicide epidemic and the keys to addressing it.
