Could you help to prevent someone from losing their home?
After losing his foot and being forced to leave work because of ill health, Martin’s world gradually became smaller. He withdrew from the support networks he had once relied on, became increasingly isolated, and turned to alcohol to cope. Through it all, his home remained his one place of safety—a refuge that gave him a sense of stability.
But behind closed doors, a crisis was unfolding. Ignoring his post meant Martin had no idea he had fallen behind on his rent. By the time he sought help, a repossession order had already been granted, and enforcement agents were booked to evict him.
After quickly unravelling the situation, our Caseworker secured pro bono legal representation and worked alongside the solicitor to halt the eviction just days before Martin was due to lose his home.
The immediate crisis had been averted, but only temporarily. Determined to find a lasting solution, our caseworker carried out a full review of Martin’s finances. They helped him claim the benefits he was entitled to and uncovered a private pension worth £80,000 that Martin was almost entirely unaware he could access.
They also discovered that Martin’s disability benefit had been awarded at the wrong rate. Although he was anxious about challenging the decision, our caseworker gave him the confidence to appeal. The caseworker prepared detailed written submissions and represented Martin throughout the process.
Armed with this improved financial position, our caseworker successfully negotiated a repayment plan that the landlord accepted, securing Martin’s home for good.
With the constant fear of eviction finally lifted, Martin has been able to focus on rebuilding his life. He is now working to improve both his mental and physical health—safe in the knowledge that his home and finances are secure.
