Volunteer work for 15 yr-olds

Rosetly Dias, a 15 year old student from The Costello School nearby, volunteered this week at Basingstoke Voluntary Action. A bright girl, Rosetly helped the organisation with its social media activities applying her creative skills and fresh outlook which immensely helped the marketing and communications team. Read below her experience with us in her own words

This week I got the opportunity to volunteer in Basingstoke volunteer action (BVA), a local charity supporting other charities and our community. I came in touch with BVA through their official website as part of my curriculum.

I was very excited to start off my first day as a volunteer. My main objective was to gain some work experience. I started off by spending some time looking at their main website and understand what they actually do. Later that day, when I met Kevin Laing ,Group and Business Development Co-ordinator who is also manages Social Media and the volunteers. He educated me on what BVA does and what he actually needs from volunteers like me which gave me a better understanding on what I should do in my days spent in BVA.

I met with another volunteer , Ojasvita who had been volunteering for BVA for almost a year. She has been managing all the social media accounts for BVA.

To begin with, I started working with Ojasvita and Kevin Laing as I was interested in social media and everything about it. We launched a new Instagram account for BVA and it was a great success. We also took photographs of the new CEO Tony Capon and the staff working there and posted it on our new Instagram page. We planned on collecting few images for the social media content plan also making encouraging posts on volunteering. Through my great experience working with these wonderful people I have learnt how important young volunteers are for these organizations and how volunteering is important for young people. I spent majority of my time building up ideas on how social media could be beneficial to BVA and its been rewarding to see how these ideas have developed in my time here.

I am very lucky to have this opportunity and I appreciate the support everyone at BVA has given me throughout my time here! I’d like to thank Kevin and Ojasvita in particular for helping me develop my skills.

Thank you Rosetly for your hardwork and dedication. We do need more bright and enthusiastic people like you in here 🙂
