Community Businesses

A community business can take many forms; from community shops, cafes, pubs through to farms. They are run by the community and are therefore accountable to their community and the profits they generate deliver positive local impact.

Our communities are full of useful spaces providing important facilities however, sometimes it can be a real struggle to keep them going. Take a look at Take Part on the government website for guidance on setting up and running community facilities, such as a shop, pub, library or green spaces.
Interested is setting up a community cinema? The BFI Neighbourhood Cinema website has lots of information, including how to get started, funding and cases studies to help you on your way. If you already have a community cinema the website also gives hints and ideas to help you.
The Plunkett Foundation offer advice and support to rural communities looking to save or set up community businesses. They have a resource library written for community businesses to provide information to successfully run and provide social benefits.
Power to Change is an independent charitable trust that supports and develops community businesses in England. It has produced a series of guides and research to support community businesses, both in starting up and established.
Locality has a series of guides on ownership of land and buildings and guides on their transfer to community ownership.
The Charity Commission Land, Property and Assets section in Setting up and running a charity provides detailed guidance that ranges from managing charity assets and resources to selling or leasing land or property.
Ethical Eats and Making Local Food Work have produced a factsheet to help new and existing community cafés get to grips with the basics of running a successful enterprise.
The Charity Retail Association has  produced guidance for Starting a Charity Shop
