Basingstoke Neighbourhood Policing Team has sent a letter to all secondary schools in the area. The letter warns parents to be alert about their children’s inappropriate use of social media. In particular, it talks about their use of platforms, such as Snapchat, for sending indecent images of themselves or friends, commonly known as ‘sexting’.
Most importantly, it warns about the consequences of ‘sexting’. And reminds parents that it is a criminal offence for anyone to be caught with an indecent image of someone under the age of 18 on any electronic device. The same goes for making or sharing such images. If convicted, children might have to sign the Sex Offenders Register. This could seriously damage their employment opportunities.
Officers are urging parents to discuss this subject sensitively with their children. Hampshire Police’s free educational programme http://safe4me.co.uk provides advice about approaching such topics.
